Six-term Republican Rep. Mark Foley of Florida resigned from the U.S. Congress on Friday following reports he had sent sexually explicit e-mails to at least one 16 year-old male former page.

Foley, chairman of the House caucus on missing and exploited children, said he would resign after ABC News reported he sent messages to current and former congressional pages with references to sexual organs and acts.

Congressional pages are teenagers who live in a Capitol Hill dorm and attend a special school while serving in the House and Senate. The program generally is trouble-free, but in July 1983 the House censured Reps. Daniel B. Crane (R-Illinois) and Gerry E. Studds (D-Massachusetts) for sexual misconduct with House pages.

Additional reporting by Fox News.
