Dressed in khaki, Bindi Irwin came to the stage with confidence and left to a standing ovation after speaking lovingly of a father who was her hero and the need for his conservation work to continue.

"When I see a crocodile I will always think of him," she told 5,000 mourners at Steve Irwin's memorial service and an estimated 300 millions more watching around the world on television.

"My daddy was my hero. He was always there for me," she said, standing in front of a picture of her father at the zoo's Crocoseum.
