In an interview with William Fay, who served as executive producer for the 1996 blockbuster film Independence Day, starring Will Smith, brings the UFO conspiracy to a new level.

According to Fay, the U.S. military and other government agencies asked him to remove all references to Area 51, officially known as "Air Force Flight Test Center, Detachment 3," or short AFFTC Det. 3, from the movie's plot.

The U.S. government does not explicitly acknowledge the existence of the Groom Lake facility, nor does it deny it. The land (AFFTC Det. 3) surrounding the lake is permanently off-limits both to civilians and normal, military air traffic. The area is protected by radar stations, and uninvited guests are met by helicopters and armed guards, Discovery's Travel Channel footage showed.
