(Reuters) - To make whale meat more appealing to young Japanese, a small restaurant just outside Tokyo is offering the dish with a contemporary spin.

In the past, Japanese youth have steered clear of whale meat, but Piman restaurant, outside of Tokyo, is trying to lure the young people in with inexpensive whale hamburgers and whale hot-dogs.

Piman restaurant owner, Akiji Ichihara, claims it isn't lucrative business due to high prices and short supplies of whale meat. That's not likely to change soon.

Japan lost a crucial vote on Friday at a meeting of the International Whaling Commission. Japan and other pro-whaling countries were trying to stop the group from discussing the fate of dolphins, porpoises and small whales, which are not covered by the 1986 moratorium on commercial whaling but which conservationists say are as threatened as the great whales.
